A rare depiction of Akali Mohn Singh at Harminder Sahib by Day & Sons dated 1864. He is depicted wearing the traditional steel blue chola gown of the Akalis. The most striking aspect of this image is the turban (dastar bunga) metal emblem, the gaj-gah (conqueror of battle elephants) which represents superior strength, intellect and daring. The main elements of the gaj-gah are crescents and the double edged sword at the top, but some can also be seen with tridents, knives and tiger claws. It was kept fastened to the turban with quoits (chakkar) and plaited steel wire. Quoits represented the cyclical nature of life, which is repeatedly used in Sikh symbolism. It states in the bottom left hand corner ‘Akali Umritsar Punjaub’. Rich colour tones and in excellent condition. Mounted on stiff card. |
