A splendid and rare Wootz Steel Katar depicting the Avtars of Vishnu in chiselled steel. Vishnu is normally characterised by the 24 Avtars or incarnations of the Supreme Being. Depictions include that of 'Vahara' (the Boar), 'Parasurama' (Rama with an axe) and 'Narad' (the Sage) to name but a few. Interestingly the Katar also depicts other Hindu Gods such as Ganesh (Elephant God) and Hunuman (Monkey God) as mentioned in many of the Hindu Puranic scriptures of old. Complete with armour piercing swollen tip and very minor traces of gold overlay to the cross bars. 18th Century. |
